DEARBORN, MI – Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell announced the endorsement of her re-election bid by several national gun violence prevention organizations, including The Brady Campaign To End Gun Violence, Everytown For Gun Safety, and the Giffords PAC. She also received the “Gun Sense Candidate” distinction from Moms Demand Action:
Of the endorsement, Gun safety advocate and former Representative Gabby Giffords said, “Advancing gun safety laws that save lives is possible with bold, courageous leadership in Congress. Congresswoman Dingell has shown that she will fight for an America free from the dangers of gun violence. Her willingness to stand up for what’s right helped lead to the passage of universal background checks—upholding the promises made to voters across the country. Congresswoman Dingell is a gun safety champion who has gotten things done and will do so again. The NRA’s money and influence can’t intimidate her. That’s why Giffords is proud to endorse Congresswoman Dingell to carry on the fight for a future where all communities and families are safer.”
“Debbie Dingell knows better than most the terror of gun violence and what needs to be done to make our communities safer. She is a tireless champion for gun violence prevention and she understands the duty Congress has to pass common-sense gun laws.” Said Shannon Watts, founder of Mom’s Demand Action. “I am proud to continue to work with Congresswoman Dingell on legislation that will save countless lives. Gun violence is an epidemic in this country and Congresswoman Dingell is doing the work every day, both in Washington and in the 12th district, to stem the tide of gun violence and implement meaningful changes.”
Brady Campaign President Kris Brown stated: “Rep. Dingell’s speech detailing the pain of witnessing domestic violence between her parents involving a gun highlights the everyday and often overlooked toll of gun violence in our country, and the emotional scars carried by friends and family who witness violence. To quote Rep. Dingell ‘I know better than most the danger [guns] pose.’ It’s that knowledge and the personal strength to stand up for common-sense solutions that make Rep. Dingell a vital voice in Congress. Brady is proud to endorse her for re-election.”
Congresswoman Dingell thanked the organizations for their support and said: “Unfortunately, gun violence has become a reality in schools, places of worship, and community gatherings that we have to worry about. Our children should not have to be doing shooter drills as part of their education. However, the conversation is changing, and the work these organizations do gives me hope for a future without gun violence. Action on this issue will keep our families, students, and communities safe and it cannot wait. We must continue our fight for common-sense reforms. I am extremely proud to have received these endorsements.”
